the substars is a music project headquartered in a spare bedroom in Minneapolis, MN. Benjamin Ortega recorded an album-y thing, Real Time, under this name in February 2007 for the RPM Challenge, and subsequently joined forces with album guests Andy Munsch (guitar) and Steve Bentley (drums) to turn said musical act into something you could listen to, like, in not-recorded form.
But, like all the best fast-food menu items, said lineup was only available for a limited time as Steve bowed out to pursue other interests. But with the RPM Challenge coming around yet again, music needed to be made! Thus, Andy and Ben kept the substars alive and rose to yet another Challenge with Buildings.
Shortly after, Sam Ridenour came along and agreed to play drums with us, and the live band was once again a thing. So that’s where we’re at now!
